What is Massage?

 

Massage is the use of the hands to manipulate the soft tissue of the body, particularly the muscles.  It can be used for relaxation, stimulation or rehabilitation of the whole body or part of.  It promotes suppleness of the muscles, improves circulation and reduces stress.  The hand movements can range from gentle stroking to an invigorating friction.  Massage leaves you with a feeling of wellbeing, reducing stress and anxiety, thus leaves you feeling relaxed.

History of Massage

 

  • The use of massage has been recorded in China from 3000BC 

  • In India, massage has always been used as part of traditional medicine

  • Greeks used massage for everyday exercise and fitness

  • Romans used massage to treat stiff and sore muscles

  • Modern massage techniques were developed by Per Henrik Ling.  He

      devised a system of movements which he found helpful for improving his health

      and maintaining his physical condition – the Swedish technique, known as

      Swedish Massage

  • Massage was used in the two world wars to treat nerve injury and for rehabilitation

  • Massage today is based on the Swedish technique and can be used alone or with other treatments – it treats both physical conditions and psychological problems

  • It is recognised as a reputable therapy, which is beneficial to all body systems and is a natural and effective way to treat both physical and mental conditions
